Your Itinerary: 3-Day Trek to Huchuy Qosqo & Machu Picchu

Day 1: Cusco – Tambomachay – Qenko

Your adventure begins with an early 7:00 AM hotel pickup in Cusco. From there, we’ll drive to Tambomachay, a fascinating archaeological site just outside the city.

Our trek takes us over high-altitude mountain passes, scenic valleys, and traditional Andean villages, offering stunning landscapes and an opportunity to spot Andean wildlife, including Geese, Partridges, Lapwings, and birds of prey.

Today’s destination is the remote Andean villages of Patabamba and Siwas, nestled near a seasonal lake. Patabamba is a traditional Andean community where locals preserve their ancient customs, primarily engaging in potato farming and llama/alpaca herding. As few tourists visit this area, you’ll receive a warm, authentic welcome from the villagers.

We will set up camp here for the night, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful evening under the starry Andean sky, accompanied by a delicious dinner.

Trek Details:

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
  • Maximum Altitude: 4,150 m / 13,615 ft

Day 2: Qenko – Huchuy Qosqo – Lamay – Aguas Calientes

After an early breakfast at our campsite, we begin a culturally immersive day, focusing on Andean traditions and Inca history.

First, we’ll visit a local family's home to learn about their way of life. The villagers are incredibly welcoming and love sharing their traditions, making this an enriching experience for both visitors and locals. If you wish, you can bring small gifts or purchase handmade local crafts as a way to support the community.

Next, we’ll hike to Huchuy Qosqo, following an ancient Inca Trail through a secluded valley rich in native flora, colorful flowers, and exotic birds. This stunning contrast from the high-altitude grasslands makes for a truly unique trek.

Upon arrival, we’ll take a break to admire the breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley before starting a guided tour of Huchuy Qosqo. You'll learn about Inca architecture, history, and culture in this lesser-known but historically significant archaeological site.

In the afternoon, we’ll descend into the Sacred Valley, arriving at Lamay, where a bus will take us to Ollantaytambo. From there, we’ll board a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.

Trek Details:

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance: 8 km

After the tour, you'll have free time to explore at your own pace. If you’ve secured permits, you can climb either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for an unforgettable panoramic view of the ancient citadel.
